Unlike wheels, which are replaced with new ones when they wear out due to rolling on the rails, the axle must last for decades under the rail vehicle and ensure safe operation throughout this period.
For this reason, it is necessary to protect the axle from external influences using reliable technology. This aspect is addressed already during the development phase of each new axle type. A well-designed axle combined with a suitable surface protection, such as molybdenum coating on the seats, strength rolling, or a wide range of special coatings, minimize life cycle costs.
Nevertheless, there are operating conditions where commonly used protection methods are insufficient or even fail, such as high speeds, aggressive environments, operation in coastal areas where the product is exposed to salt in combination with increased humidity, etc.
Only BONAXLE® induction-hardened axles can withstand these conditions. This technology has been proven over decades of demanding operation in high-speed trains, and in GHH-BONATRANS we have added a new dimension to it – induction hardening protects the entire length of the axle. This is the most comprehensive technology, which not only protects the axle from mechanical damage during operation and maintenance, but also significantly increases its safety and service life while reducing the carbon footprint and life cycle costs.
Designed for reliability and low life cycle costs
We supply GHH-BONATRANS axles both as part of wheelsets and separately for wheelset assembly at the customer's premises, and as replacement parts. They are designed to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation throughout the vehicle life cycle.
Modern rail vehicles therefore increasingly use axles with a longitudinal bore, which enables quick non-destructive diagnostics of the axle condition without the need for its disassembly. This technology contributes also to reduction in the weight of the wheelset. This feature, together with other design solutions, allows carriers to efficiently plan maintenance, increase vehicle availability, and reduce operating costs.
Each axle is developed with respect to the requirements of the relevant standards as well as specific operating conditions and customer requirements.
Our axles reflect many years of experience in their design, results of research and development, and valuable feedback from operation and customers. This has resulted in BONAXLE® axles, designed and manufactured to serve reliably for decades, i.e. for the entire service life of a rail vehicle. At the same time, their durability and endurance have brought significant savings to operators.
